Growth In Consciousness

Hi Brendan.
I like to clarify something with you, and share some questions I have regarding Consciousness.
What would be the growth of consciousness? It seems to me that is not just a matter of becoming conscious but creating something new (for example: a new distinction). Even if I’m conscious of some Absolute, that don’t necessarily means I’ve had a growth in consciousness.
What is the direction to go? What is growing? The distinctions, forms of conciousness?
In ”The book of genius” the new context that Ralston proposes (the ”self-caused context”) pretty much there is a growth in conciousness because everything that was before continues the same but now with some new possibilty that everything is seen as caused by the self (even the distinction of self). I don’t know if I’m being clear, but my main question would be what is the growth of consciousness?
