Morality

Hi Brendan,

I was wondering what morality is. What’s considered good or bad by humans seems to be continually changing. Some things that were good 50 years ago may no longer be considered as such. It seems to me morality is fundamentally a human invention. Many people have a problem with this. They consider it moral relativism, and assume this stance justifies any action, no matter how disastrous. Do you have some clarity to offer on this matter?

Thanks.

    Diego,
Hey thanks for writing in. I keep coming back to an aspect of questioning that can get tricky. That is noticing the perspective from which the person is questioning. Or, for what purpose do you want to know? Often, without realizing it people will attempt to apprehend the truth from a moral, philosophical, or psychological standpoint. Holding a perspective like this will tend to interfere with discovering what's true.

If instead, you try to go for what is true not from any standpoint, or from what Peter Ralston would say from nothing, this will help clarify the matter and put you in a much better place to actually discover what's really true.

Or like we talk about in workshops. People often try to discover the truth from a place of use and value. Then they will inevitably look for what "they" think is useful or valuable and ignore the rest. This can go on unconsciously and again gets in the way.

Apply these considerations to your question from the post and look deeper. It should empower your ability to contemplate the matter. Then you tell me what morality is.

Also here is a video as well enjoy!
