I am posting this exchange to help add some value to your consideration of physical training and why we might pursue doing something like a set of movements?
G’day Brendan,
I have met you on two occasions when you came to the Rochester Thai Chi Ch’uan Center (RTCCC) for workshops. I thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from your instruction.
John Wagner taught me the Mini Set and I practice it as part of my forms routine. I have also watched/studied your YouTube video of the Mini Set.
My question is, when the Mini Set was developed by Master Ralston, was there a specific purpose or theme in mind?
Thank you.

Joe,
Thanks for writing. Sorry for the delay.
Yes there was a specific idea in mind. He uses the set for the express purpose of training the body-being work and that’s it. He wanted to give people a set of movements they could train and apply the principles and structural points to so they would actually work on them. Otherwise people tend to get quite lost on their own. Its not a requisite, it just seems to happen that way.
Its not “what” movements you do its HOW you do them that makes a difference. The body-being is the “how” in this case.
If you haven’t already I would recommend getting his book Zen Body-Being.
I hope this helps.
Brendan
