How do I learn to fall?

Hey Brendan!

I got a question concerning mind-body “relation”. Besides meditations and consciousness-work I am skateboarding and I want to find a way how to learn to fall at high speeds/heights to reduce the impact on the ground as much as possible. I am falling all the time, but to do certain stuff I have to know how to roll my whole body over the ground when I am falling from gaps or loosing balance at high speeds (or both).

Do you have a strategy or technique from martial arts to learn it systematically? A principle? A certain martial art that would improve the falling ability?

I thank you for your help! And thank you for all your videos at youtube. They are helping a lot!

Best Regards,
Rafael

Rafael,

Here is a good basics video on falling I did awhile back. https://youtu.be/_g_8eZNXZeM

The principle for falling is “smooth.” Your transition from standing or skateboarding to the ground needs to be smooth with no bumps, dings, grinds etc…. Anything that is not smooth will take a hit from the ground.

I would also watch some videos of good parkour guys and study what they do when they need to fall. They do it for real and on hard surfaces.

Then make sure you get plenty of repetition training in. You want the motions to be automatic so when you need them they are accessible without thinking.

Hope that helps,

Brendan
