Why is self often called an illusion?

Why is it often said that self is an illusion? I have DNA. My genetics can be observed through scientific means. And if I ever committed a crime, the criminal justice system could used forensics to attach the crime to me (I won’t do that. I’m merely using this as an example to make a point).

How can the self be an illusion when Science shows that my self is real?
